Monster Phonics- Find out all about Our Phonics scheme
What is phonics?
•Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.
What phonic scheme do we use?
•At Ysgol Acrefair we have adopted a new phonics scheme called Monster Phonics. Monster Phonics is a child centred approach to learning phonics. The color coded system accelerates learning to read and write. It uses colour coded monsters to bring learning to life.
Where it all begins.
•Children will be introduced to Monster Phonics in our nursery class as they follow the Foundations element of the scheme. The foundations elements focusses on the important skills that children need before they learn to read and write.
•The emphasis during the foundation programme is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmented skills. They will focus on
•general sound discrimination
•rhythm and rhyme
•alliteration
•voice sounds
•oral blending and segmenting
Phonic Sessions
•Children will experience daily sessions. The sessions are fun, engaging and multisensory. Each session comprises of review- teach- hook- activity- plenary.
Reading Books
•As soon as children are developmentally ready, they will be introduced to the decodable books (words that they can sound out). These will be used in school for guided, group and individual reading. Each book is closely linked to the sounds, the children have been covering in class.
