Croeso i Dosbarth Eyry!

Teaching and learning in our school changes each year according to the needs of the children in our classes however we would still like to give you an insight into what a year in Dosbarth Eyry looks like!
To help us to do this, we would like to share some of their adventures from last year….
It has been a busy, hard-working, and enjoyable year in Dosbarth Eryr as we finally managed to get through a full year with no online learning. The pupils have responded maturely to the easing of covid restrictions in schools and have enjoyed being able to mix with other pupils in the school as extra-curricular activities have returned.
Our topics this year have been based on the UN’s sustainable development goals. In the Autumn term, we focused on Goal 16 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure”. As part of our transition into the new curriculum, pupils came up with several inquiry questions to research and tailor their learning based on the topic. A major focus being on the industrial revolution and how jobs and industry has changed over the years. We also attended two fantastic school trips during this term to the National Slate Museum and Danger Point.
It was lovely to welcome families back to school just before Christmas as year 5 and 6 came together to put on an outdoor Christmas performance.
Our topic for the spring term was Goal 15 “Life on Land”. During this topic we focused on topics such as pollution, life cycles, food chains and our big question “Was lockdown good for Planet Earth?”. Pupils ended this topic by creating documentaries inspired by David Attenborough. We also welcomed Miss Alexandrou to the class as she continued her teacher training.
In May, we were very excited to attend our first residential at Robin Wood. We had an amazing 3 days there and used our learning powers to overcome many challenges but also made memories that will last a lifetime. The high ropes course, caving, canoeing, the zip-wire and trapeze were just some of the children’s favourite activities.
In the summer term we completed two mini topics. We celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by focussing on how life has changed from 1952 through to the 1990s through to 2022. We also compared life in Acrefair and Wales to Australia, celebrating our own culture and how it differs from other parts of the world.
Alongside our topics, pupils have made fantastic progress with their maths this year, particularly with their times tables. In science they have studied electricity, habitats and forces and made some Christmas decorations in forest school. In PE they have continued to be taught by Progressive Sports across several sports and enjoyed online singing and dancing from Amasing.
Many of the pupils have also represented the school at football and choir this year and have played active roles on the various departments of the school council. It has been an action-packed year and I wish them all the best as they enter their final year of primary education.
