school council: visit from Welsh Assembly Minister

On Friday afternoon we were pleased to welcome Mr Ken Skates (AM) to Ysgol Acrefair.
Mr Skates joined us for a School Council meeting during which the children discussed concerns over the use of the land where the park used to be on the school grounds. You may be aware that the park had to be removed due to safety issues and the land remains un-used.
During the meeting, Mr Skates and our school council members discussed possible uses for the land. We were all impressed with the childrens ideas, especially the suggestion that the land could be developed into allotments which could be used by the school and the local community. The children explained to Mr Skates how having an allotment would mean that our junior children could attend a gardening club and would also help to support their learning access the curriculum. They had so many ideas for lessons that they would love to do linked the building the allotment and then growing,  cooking and selling their produce!
Mr Skates was especially impressed with the children’s awareness of sustainability and their suggestion for how the materials that are already on the land could be upcycled and reused!
We are all very excited about the project and can’t wait to begin formulating some plans. We will keep you posted on our progress.
We would also like to say a huge well done to the children who attended the meeting- they conducted themselves in such a mature way. We were very proud of you all.
