Autumn news

It has been a busy term in Ysgol Acrefair, filled with lots of exciting times.

The year started with lots of new topics in our classrooms, from learning all about ‘ourselves’ in Reception to World War 1 in Year 6. All of the children in Year 6 came to school dressed as evacuees and spent the day in role. They explored the way that they might feel if they were to be evacuated from their home and away from their parents. They used this experience to help bring their writing to life. Following on from this the year 6 children visited the arboretum in Burton on Trent to find out more about the impact of World War 1.  Other trips this term have included a visit to Wrexham museum and a visit to Danger Point.

We were glad to welcome so many people to St Mary’s church in Ruabon for our Harvest Festival and again, more recently, for our Christingle concert more. Children from Years 3, 4 and 5 sang beautifully and helped us to feel very festive. Back in school the Year 6 children wowed us with a fabulous pantomime ‘Ali-baba and the Bongo Bandits’ which they have worked on with Claire from Activate drama and our infant children all performed brilliantly in their Christmas concerts ‘It’s a baby’ and ‘Countdown to Christmas’ too. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

With stalls selling the children’s own crafts alongside lots of external sellers, the Christmas fair was a great success. The elves in the secret room were busy wrapping presents all night so lots of our children’s parents will be waking up to a lovely surprise gift on Christmas day. Thank you to everyone who helped out.

During the final week of term our school choir went out on tour and visited some of our local residential homes for ‘Carols and a cuppa’. Mrs Martin and Mrs Brown were so proud of the children’s singing and the children loved their time chatting to the residents.

On Thursday 20th December the children all took part in the Reindeer Run to raise money for Nightingale House. Together they raised more than £900 and there is still money coming into school.

In September the Estyn carried out their inspection of Ysgol Acrefair and we were pleased to achieve a rating of ‘good’ in all areas. You can read Estyn’s report at

Mrs Halley has now returned to school from her maternity leave and will be teaching Year 4 on Monday to Thursday. Mr Griffiths will continue to teach Year 4 on  Friday.

We are also pleased to welcome Miss E Jones back from her maternity leave in January.
